Week 3: Artists Who Broke The Rules

Hello!

These are some of the few examples of artists/designers that have broken the rules in their work.

Example 1:

Paul Poiret was a fashion designer who wouldn’t play by the book. Poiret was constantly evolving his style. He echoed art movement such as Cubism and expressionism in the 1910s in his designs using straight lines and geometry in his fashion. Breaking all known rules, Poiret made column dresses with material in bright blocks of colour. This was a big change for women used to the subtle pastels that were popular in Edwardian society.

Example 2:

Coco Chanel is the classic example of a woman who broke the rules, especially for her time. She disregarded the conventions of her time period and created her own fashion perspective. She created a world where luxury and comfort go hand-in-hand. This pioneer of fashion will have a long-lasting influence in fashion designs to come, because her style will always stand for what she believed in – simplicity and everlasting elegance.

Example 3:

Picasso is the greatest artist ever. He broke rules and started new forms of art. He was radical, he created an entirely new form of art along with Braque. He broke the rules, he experimented, he painted what was beautiful and interesting. He painted with unmatched energy. He could paint like the masters by the age of 15. He taught the world that art did not have to be real although he could create that way if he chose to. He painted up till the night before he died at age 91. He excelled in more than just painting, he was a great sculptor as well as draftsman. Picasso expanded on numerous art forms and is without question the most talented artist in history along side Michelangelo.

Reflection!

I've learnt that many people have broken the rules of art! If they didn't, it'd be a common and boring thing to see. There will not be much explorations if they hadn't broken the rules. Firstly, the artists have to learn the rules properly before breaking them. We also do not learn just by following the rules. We have to do it or by falling over. With the broken rules, we could at least see how the artists came up with new ideas and how it has changed the lives of people. People would also remember how creative and artistic these people were back then.

Thanks for reading!
